Printed size vs actual size
The 14x25x1 on the frame is a nominal size, rounded up for ordering. The filter itself is smaller so it can slide into the slot. Filterbuy, Nordic Pure, AIRx (sold by Discount Filters) and AprilAire's A14251 all list exactly 13.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 inches.
Filtrete is the outlier. Its Allergen Defense (MPR 1000) filter is listed at 13.78 x 24.78 x 0.84 inches and its High Performance (MPR 1500) at 13.84 x 24.84 x 0.78 inches. That puts the spread across brands at 0.34 inches in width and height, and about 0.09 inches in depth. Filtrete rates its filters by MPR. The listings cited here also state a MERV: MPR 300 is MERV 5, MPR 1000 is MERV 11, MPR 1500 is MERV 12.
How to measure your slot
Pull the old filter and read the printed size, then measure the slot or frame with a tape. If the opening is a full 14 x 25 inches, either cut will go in, and Filtrete leaves the smaller gap. If the opening is tighter than about 13.85 x 24.85, choose one of the 13.5 x 24.5 brands. If you measure between the two, the smaller 13.5 x 24.5 cut is the safer buy, since a filter that is too big will not go in at all.
Depth
Every listing here is a 1 inch nominal filter that is 0.75 to 0.84 inches thick. A 14x25x2 or thicker filter is a different size and will not fit a 1 inch slot.
